What Makes A Good Photo?

Sharing is caring!

When you look back through your photos with family, you probably find yourself lingering over certain photos…laughing, telling stories, and enjoying those memories. It can be a lot of fun to relive special times with family and friends!

When I create my photo books, I journal the events of our life so my family can read the albums like books. They love that our albums are in “story” format. To me, in my work as a photo organizer and book designer (or as the chief photographer of our house), a good photo is the one with a story behind it. It might not be the best photo taken. But years from now, it’ll be the one that brings back a special memory!

We were on vacation over Christmas break this year, visiting my brother in law’s family in Hawaii. Talk about a dream vacation! My kids had a great time playing with their cousins; we visited Pearl Harbor, which was an amazing history lesson; and spent the rest of the time at the beach. If you were to ask either one of my boys what their favorite part of the trip was, they’ll both say Sunset Beach. The kids all started out on boogie boards, but soon switched over to jumping and crashing into the waves. The waves were a pretty good size, even close to the shore. My youngest son has a look of pure glee on his face as he flipped backwards into the waves. He probably spent close to an hour doing that. My oldest son was simply running into the waves and crashing into them. Often times a grouchy teenager, it was nice to see the “kid” in him resurface. I don’t think they stopped smiling the entire time we were there.

My challenge to you?

Focus on the Storytelling with Your Photos

The next time you take photos, make sure you take some candids in addition to the posed shots. Take pictures when no one is paying attention. That’s where you’ll find the stories. Then surprise your family with a “story book” and watch their reactions! When you start to focus on storytelling instead of simply picture taking, you’ll find you’re able to create a very special legacy for your family!
