Staples to the Rescue! HP Deskjet 3520 e-All-in-One Printer Review

The end of the school year always seems to bring lots of papers and projects. Inevitably whenever I am trying to print something, it seems like my children are too! Our home printer is not a heavy duty one, frequently jams, and it’s frustrating when I’m trying to print something that I need for work, and I have a kid trying to print a paper at the same time.  We’ve run out of ink late at night TWICE in the last month. You can only imagine the reaction of the teenager when they’ve got a paper due in the morning, and there are no replacement ink cartridges in the house!

Frustrated mom out of ink for the printer

So when I was approached a couple of weeks ago about doing a review for a printer for Staples, I was thrilled! Having a second printer here in the house solves a lot of problems…and the fact that it was free was even nicer! I can’t even begin to tell you how helpful it is to have a backup with two teens and a tween in the house. I am a big Staples fan…some weeks it seems like I practically live in that store! Perhaps I should start being a little more prepared and stock up on ink cartridges!

I received the Hewlett Packard Deskjet 3520, an e-All-in-One Printer, offering printing, scanning, and copying capabilities. It’s really nice to have the capability to copy and scan right here at home. There’s been many times the kids have needed to scan an old picture for a project. And with summer coming up, I know it’s going to come in handy for me as well. There will be medical forms to make copies of for various camps, and if we’re lucky, we can simply scan them in and then just email them instead of mailing a hard copy. But if I have to mail a copy…well, then I have the ability to take care of that too! So having an All in One printer really comes in handy.

The printer was very easy to set up. Even a 12 year can do it. How do I know this? Well, because I actually didn’t set the printer up myself! My youngest was practically chomping at the bit when it arrived at the house, but my husband and I had planned a night out. While we were out, my 12 year old set it up. His older siblings each wanted the printer to go in their room, but apparently didn’t feel like setting it up. So my youngest seized the opportunity…and put it on his own desk! It’s not staying there, but we’re indulging him for a little bit. Eventually it’s going to go on a table in the upstairs hallway. That way when someone is up late at night finishing up a paper or report, they’re not waking up someone else!

We have both Mac and PC laptops in our house, and it was very easy to install the software. I scanned several pictures and brought them wirelessly into my laptop with no problems. I thought for sure I was going to have to attach a USB cord but the wireless functionality worked great. I love that you can print from your smartphone and tablet as well! We have a couple of iPads in the house and not only can we print from those, but also from our phones! How cool is that?!

I also like that this printer has individual color ink cartridges rather than the multicolor ones. That way if you run out of one color, you simply replace the cartridge that is out of ink, rather than all of them at the same time.

Overall, I’m quite pleased with this printer. It’s definitely lightened the load on the original printer that we had, which is nice. We’ve had no issues with paper jams, or any other problems for that matter.  All in all, I would say if you’re looking for a printer for household use, this is a great one to consider!

Now this is a product worth reviewing! I ran out of ink after maybe 5 prints. Ink is so expensive but I guess we'll have to get it...

That's what I feel like on my other printer!! We are ALWAYS out of ink! Let me tell you teenagers are not happy when they have something due in the morning and you say "well, I guess you'll have to print it at school." I'll be happy when summer is here!

I have a similar printer and we have run into numerous problems with it deciding not to print from my daughter's computer. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't! I thought the separate cartridges would be a cost savings, but they are not. I ALWAYS end up buying all new cartridges at the same time :) I do a lot of printing and now after a year and a half, it is time for a new printer :( I hope you have better luck with yours :)

We've had no problems so far and we are printing from multiple devices...4 laptops, an iPad, and iPhones! I've always found that the separate ink cartridges are a savings for me, so I was happy to have that feature. I never seem to replace them at exactly the same time...sometimes close but not always. Sorry yours didn't work out the way you wanted it to. :( I'm really happy with ours!!

{Melinda} I have this exact same printer! I've had it for about three years now. I love it. It rarely jams and is a workhorse. For me, the only downside is that it goes through ink fairly quickly and the replacement cartridges aren't cheap. Quality printer, though.

Every printer I have owned goes through ink. So far we haven't had to replace the cartridges that came with this one yet, which is surprising to me, because I am flying through ink on the other one (hence the late night issues). I really should do a better job with keeping extra in the house!!
