The One Way Community Closet {From the Teenage Daughter’s Handbook}

Sharing is caring!

Teenage daughter rules: What’s mine is mine. What’s yours is mine too. But no, what’s mine is not yours. (Not that I want to borrow anything in my daughter’s closet other than maybe a scarf, but I want to get the rules straight here).

For a long time, I was the very un-hip mom.  The “I can’t believe you are wearing that” Mom. I got the eye roll when I asked if she thought I could wear skinny jeans. (I bought them anyway.)

From the Teenage Daughter Handbook

Then one day, all of my skin care products disappeared into my teenage daughter’s bathroom. My anti-aging cleanser, my wrinkle creams, all of it. “I need to take care of my skin,” she informed me. Nevermind that this stuff is made for middle aged moms. My teenager is convinced that if it can keep me from looking old, it’ll make her skin beautiful forever.

Then my clothes started migrating as well. Keep in mind that I am well into my 40s and am not wearing anything cutesy or revealing. Not to mention that my daughter is a good 4 inches taller than me already and still growing. Yet, I still catch her rummaging in my room all the time. Sweatshirts disappear right and left…she even takes her father’s t-shirts. To me, she says things like “Oh I needed a tank top, “ or “Well it was in my room.” Huh? Maybe because you put it there. Or my personal favorite…“You gave that to me.” When? When I was talking in my sleep?

When shopping with her, if I pick something out that she happens to like as well, her first reaction is “We can share that, right?”  I know it’s only a matter of time before it finds its way out of my closet, and into hers. Once it disappears into the abyss of my daughter’s room, it may never come out. One, it’s such a disaster zone in there that I’m not even sure she knows what’s in there anymore. Two, she does her own laundry so once it’s in her hot little hands, it’s hard to get back.

For Mother’s Day, I’m asking for my clothes back.

That's funny! Makes me happy I only have boys. I have to worry about them stealing my Sharpies and all my electronics, but my clothes and makeup are pretty safe!

Oh my gosh - this could be my 22 year old daughter & me!! She borrows my designer handbags, my jewelry, and my tops. Especially tops that I haven't even had a chance to wear. I'm just thankful that she wears a size 8.5 shoe and I wear a 6.5!! Of course, if I borrow any of her tops, handbags, or jewelry, she acts like it's an act of aggression on my part, LOL!!

Oh yes! Most of my handbags disappeared...her theory is if she hasn't seen me use it in a while, it's fair game. Honestly I don't care so much about those but the jewelry and the clothes that aren't returned drive me nuts! When she goes to sleep away camp, I am going to go thru her room and find everything that is mine (if I can).

I have 3 girls who have tons and tons of clothes. Once in awhile they ask to borrow something and I like to share--they ask and they give it back afterward. I guess I'm pretty lucky!

How awesome. If it's the other way around, and you steal clothes from her closet, there's 34 percent chance you will end up on a midday talk-show because of it. I love when my girls steal my T-shirts or dress shirts. They (sometimes) smell nice when I get them back.

I know it is just a matter of time before Isabella and I are in this place. She already takes all my hair stuff. She doesn't do her own laundry so I'm in luck (or is it unluck, how did you get yours to do that?).
