Staying Safe When You Run

Sharing is caring!

Today on my run I got spooked. I was running in the grass fields near the woods where we always take our dogs. There are two fields, and there is a heavy thicket of bushes between the two. I got the feeling someone (or something) was watching me from inside of those bushes. I couldn’t shake it. I kept turning around to see if there was anything behind me. I had one dog with me but he was running ahead of me. It was a weird feeling. I have no idea if anything was really there or not, but it bothered me enough that I headed back for the woods toward my house. Call it intuition, but I really felt like there was something there.

A few days ago, I was running with all 3 of our dogs, when one of them clipped me from behind and sent me flying. I went down pretty hard. I scraped up the skin underneath the knee, twisted my ankle, and have a couple bruises. As I was hobbling home, I was thinking about running safety. And then I was thinking about it again today. Today might have been nothing, and the fall in the woods was definitely a fluke, but it got me to thinking about how to stay safe on your runs.

Staying Safe When You Run

Be alert. Running by yourself, it’s easy to get in a zone. When I run by myself (or with a dog) is usually when I do my best thinking. But you need to be aware of your surroundings. That means not listening to music. I know a lot of my running friends love to listen to music when they run. But if you’re listening to music, you can’t hear traffic around you, or someone behind you. Where I live there are a lot of sharp corners that you can’t see around, and cars come flying by. I can’t tell you how many times I have almost been hit because drivers aren’t paying attention.

Run with a partner, or your dog. I know, I know, I went down because of one of my dogs. But as soon as I did, all 3 dogs stopped in their tracks. They didn’t continue running…they waited to see if I was ok. And there really is safety in numbers. I had a friend in college who was running on a well traveled trail just off the bike path when a man with a knife and duct tape jumped out from behind a bush and attacked her. She managed to get away, but she was beaten up pretty badly. Ever since then, I have been super cautious about where I run when I am by myself.

Bring a phone. That way if you get lost or need help, you can call someone or look up directions to get back. I have to admit I almost never do this, unless I am running by myself in a new place. But I have a few familiar routes I tend to stick to, and I prefer to run with people or dogs, so I’m not usually alone.

What are your best tips for staying safe when you run?

I use my phone to play Pandora and run the Nike + app. I run where cars can be so I don't use headphones. I don't run too early alone by myself for that reason, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Great list!

I just had to read this. Funny, I was thinking the same thing about music this morning when I was out for my run. I don't run with my music, but more because I like to enjoy the beauty and sounds. Something else I do is greet other runners/walkers with a 'good morning.' today, all I met had ear buds in and didn't hear me. something a bit sad about that. thanks for the reminder about the phone too.

I always say good morning too and the ear bud folks never hear me, which means that they won't hear something else coming at them either. :( Thanks for stopping in this morning!!

Hi Michelle,

Excellent post. Call me paranoid but I would never go running alone anywhere. Not here in Jamaica and not in the US. Perhaps it is too much of paying attention to the news out there and seeing what can happen. By the way, your instincts were spot on - pay attention to them always - it is a way of protecting us. It is perhaps because you had the dog with you why you were okay that day. To be safe, you are right, run with a group, run with dogs, and have your phone! We as women must learn to think smart, act smart and pay attention to anything odd around us. As an addition I would like to remind all the women reading this post about something else. I have a friend who is a Detective and he says "always remember if you are attacked and if they attempt to take you elsewhere, NEVER go to the next location. Fight, scream, punch, do what you can so you are not taken elsewhere." This has always stayed with me.

That is an awesome tip! I have heard it before but it is such a good reminder!! I know I have mentioned that to my kids in the past but it's worth repeating to them! Thank you!

Hi Michelle! I've thought of runners safety several times. Over the past few years it seems like there has been so many attempted abductions on female runners. Just another one a few weeks ago! Usually I run along the road (which has its own safety concerns) and try and stay out in the open. I always have my phone as I run and always tell my husband where I'm going, how far and when I should be home. My dogs are too small to be of any help :)

Those are great tips too!! Definitely scary with the abduction attempts...I haven't heard of any of that here, thank goodness! But ever since my friend was attacked, I have been pretty wary and cautious!

Glad you are ok! Sorry about the twisted ankle! I hate running on my own. I have watched one too many CSIs and Criminal Minds (plus my years working in law enforcement) and I won't go out for a walk or a run by myself unless I am in a neighborhood. I think your tips are great. A whistle also works. Usually bad guys don't want to get caught, so if you're blaring a whistle, it may cause them to run off and try to get someone that is an easier target. I hate that creepy, skin crawling feeling!

Oh so many people had so many great ideas! I love the whistle idea too!
